When I was reading the first chapter of this book I didn't really like it. It just came across as awkward and a bit amateurish. For example, the author introduced several of the main characters at once, describing them in detail, rather than letting the characters tell this through the story. But, I needed something to read so I carried on.

So happy I did! By the time the 2nd chapter hit the writer got into her flow and it turned into a great chick-lit novel.
I could relate to the main character numerous times – her thoughts, her anxieties, her second guessing herself, even down to wasting her 39th year stressing about 40. Time and time again I caught myself thinking “I’ve thought the exact same thing!”

The characters were completely believable, all their personality traits and hang-ups – I’ve met most of them at some point in my life.

I ended up thoroughly enjoying this book and the rocky rollercoaster of a journey it is for the main character. This is not some neatly written, everything’s perfect story. Several times I caught myself thinking it was about to turn into a lightweight, predictable novel but I was happily disappointed.

If you like a chick-lit novel with both a bit of depth and some humour then definitely try this.

I'm a huge Meredith Schorr fan. How Do You Know? was a pleasure to read because of its depth, the beautiful writing, the wonderfully relatable characters, and the honesty with which Schorr told this story. While there were plenty of laugh out loud moments, which I can always count on with Schorr's writing, I also appreciate the fact that this book forced me to contemplate the very serious question of how a woman can ever truly know if a man is the absolute "right" one for her, forever.

The main character, Maggie, inspired me with her strength and entertained me with her funny little flaws. I was also moved by her realistic inner dialogue, often tinged with self-doubt, as is my own and that of most women I know. It was a joy to get to see the ups and downs of Maggie's friendships. The love and dedication to one another that she and the women in her life shared is something I hope all women get to experience. I know I'd be lost without my best girlfriends! But of course, when women are that close, there are little insults and jealousies that naturally come to the surface and those were artfully inserted into the dialogue in ways any woman would recognize!

I applaud Schorr for taking her readers on a complicated, sometimes painful journey that didn't provide simplistic answers and certainly didn't end up where you would have expected it to at the beginning. How Do You Know? sends multiple empowering messages to all women to not settle if you're not sure, to take risks so that you'll continue to grow, and to follow your own path, regardless of the many pressures society or family may place on you to do what they think you should do.

In How Do You Know?, author Meredith Schorr weaves a wonderful women's fiction story that is a must read for every woman.

Maggie Piper is on the cusp of turning thirty-nine, and as she takes stock of her life, she realizes that her biological clock is ticking loudly, and wonders if the various life milestones are out of reach. I absolutely loved following Maggie's story, she is a sassy lady that anyone can relate to. I saw so much of myself in Maggie, I found myself smiling as she pondered the various life milestones, I too once found myself in her shoes, so I couldn't help but cheer for her as she embarked on her year long personal journey of self discovery. Author Meredith Schorr weaves a lovely story that is like a breath of fresh air, it flows so smoothly that you can't help but find yourself immersed in Maggie's story.

There is enough drama, humor, laugh-out-loud moments, and even a bit of food for thought that makes you stop and ponder your own life's journey. How Do You Know? is simply a refreshing food for your soul kind of story that will stay with you long after the last word has been read.
