Robin D. Owens has once again done a superb job of taking the reader on two people's fascinating journey of love with complications, hurdles, and many important subplots. What a creative, spellbinding writer! My first comments are about the two lovers and challenges they face.

Trif Clover is one determined lady! Whatever it takes, even going door to door in Noble Country, Mid Class areas or those places where Commoners live, she WILL find her Heart Mate! She knows he is in Druida! Trif is young, attractive, musically talented, determined and upbeat. However, Trif is also frustrated. She has known for three years that she has a Heart Mate but he has not come forward and despite having a charm key, she does not know who he is. Trif is a member of a large, close-knit, prolific group of many relatives and lots of family members, most living in one noisy compound. Trif is a member of Celta's Mid Class.

Ilex Winterberry is a Guardsman who is the principal detective who solves crimes including homicides in Druida. Early on we learn that he is Trif Clover's Heart Mate. We learn that he is handsome, masculine and skilled enough to take on members of the Holly family in combat and beat them in their workout facility! Also, we learn that he is more than twice as old as Trif. From his father's side of the family Ilex has inherited the ability to see visions about things that will happen in the future. He estimates 90 percent of these visions come true. Ilex is Second Son in his family. He is not Winterberry Heir. His brother, Meyar, fulfills that role. Both boys are estranged from their mother, D'Winterberry, who by all accounts is a greedy, addicted, self-centered, and disliked person who has not taken care of the estate nor done justice to her title as head of the family. Given her behavior, Ilex presses his brother to reclaim the estate and title.

As Trif Clover goes from door to door looking for her Heart Mate, he is right under her nose. Her friends and family members are concerned about Trif because what she is doing is unusual and becoming public and embarrassing. Several people have suggested she stop the search, including a few people who fear for her safety. Only one person has a concrete reason for fearing for her safety -- Ilex Winterberry. He has been sworn to secrecy about the latest criminal activity. It appears that a cult is killing young nobles and others who have uncontrolled Flair and who have fams -- special pets that communicate mentally with their owners. Not only are the people killed but some form of ritual takes place and a particular body part is being removed.

Ilex and Chief Sawyr look everywhere for clues, seek all possible leads, and interview any and everyone who might have information. Ilex is fearful for Trif because she fits the victims' profile. So, he has moved into the Mid Class Lodge, where Trif lives but he refuses to HeartBond because of a vision he has had. He realizes his decision places Trif at risk. With his move to the Mid Class Lodge maintaining secrecy has become much more difficult. They are now in close proximity and their bond is growing! However, I will leave to you the answer to the questions: Does he identify himself as her Heart Mate? Is there a dramatic event that shows Trif what he fears and explain why he is fearful of having her as his bonded Heart Mate? Does his vision come true? Don't skip the epilogue! The epilogue contains an exciting and positive conclusion that may lead to a reversal of the near destruction of the Holly family. This fifth book continues a great series!

Robin Owens continues her wonderful science fiction series about a race of people set on a planet where ESP and talking pets are common. The story centers around a young beautiful woman who knows she has a heartmate somewhere and goes about trying to locate her mate with the help of a bespelled key. A much older man knows he is her mate but believes he does not have much longer to live and since heartmates do not continue living when their mate dies he is determined to make sure she never knows she is his mate. He is also determined to protect her from a serial killer who is stalking people like her who have difficulty controling their "flair" (psychic energy).

The story also contains characters from previous books and lets you know what is going on it their lives. I especially get a kick out of the Fam Pets especially Fam Cats. They are cats with a healthy dose of self esteem who are psychic and can talk to their owners mentally. Although it is hard to tell if the people own the cats or the cats own the people. Her books are original and very entertaining. I recommend you start with "Heartmate" and continue with the whole series.
I look for books that catch me from the first page and this is one of two that I have found in the last 6 weeks. The other is LOVER AWAKENED by J R Ward. HEART QUEST is the story of Black Ilex Winterberry and Trif Clover. They were minor characters in the other Celta novels. I love Celta and these stories are some of my best keepers. I noticed a reviewer wished she wrote faster and I have been guilty of wishing the same thing, however some of my favorite authors are so busy writing more books and more series, they have stopped being the enjoyable reads I expect from them. So I guess I would rather wait and get quality over quantity.

Ilex Winterberry is a Guardsman. He has been assigned to the Noble houses of Celta. Now he is looking for a murderer who specializes in Nobles with unstable Flair psi. He is 45 and he thinks he is to old for his Heartmate. He knows that Trif Clover is his Heartmate, but she is only 20. He also has a touch of precognition and has known for yrs he will die early. So he doesn't want to bond with her and have her die when he dies. Ilex is a virle handsome man and Trif is a beautiful young lady. Where there is a Heartmate there is also attraction.

Trif has been looking for her Heartmate. She has made a heartkey charm which should help her. Working in her family's furniture shop is not what she wants to do with her life. She is an amazing musician and plays her own compositions on the flute, and several other instruments. But she is not so confident that she will approach Passiflora Holm who is the premire composer on Celta. Trif also has unstable Flair psi. She hopes that when she finds her Heartmate her Flair will become stable.

The murderers are taking the hearts from their victims and consuming them to assimilate their flair. Ilex is close on their heels and as Samhain approaches he worries for the safety of Trif. Trif and Ilex are brought togather by some interfereing friends.

I love it. Any time I can journey to Celta and spend time with some old and new friends, it is a pleasure. While I enjoy stories about the Nobility, any Heartmate story is good.
4.5 stars - this story was interesting from start to finish with some surprises and the addition of secondary characters (one of which is the turquoise house that I'm rooting for - hope it has a family soon!) that were interesting. I would have rated it 5 stars if I thought I'd reread it. Its not quite standalone enough to do so - more dependent on understanding the series & other characters. Since I've been a bit bored by 3 of the prior 4 books in the series - I don't think it'll be a 'keeper'. The characters were interesting, fun & different things happened & there was a LOL moment I really enjoyed. In the end the 'big bad' wasn't who I thought it'd be - she might be such in the next one.
