This One Time with Julia First Edition David Lampson Books
First, let me say this book is both whimsical and wonderfully dark, spilling over with a splendid innocence of Joe, Mr. Lampson's leading character. The novel has the tone of Catcher in the Rye to it. I don't think the book is young adult lit; it's aimed at a general literary fiction audience. The language is simple and will appeal to young readers, but the novel has more of John Irving feel to both the characters and plot lines. I loved the book. This writer is going to be a tour de force in 21st century literature. He is only 34 years-old and is brilliant. If you have not bought the book yet, do yourself a favor and buy something that is so remarkable you will never forget it.Tags : Amazon.com: This One Time with Julia: First Edition (9781595143402): David Lampson: Books,David Lampson,This One Time with Julia: First Edition,Razorbill,1595143408,Mysteries & Detective Stories,Social Themes - Dating & Sex,Brothers;Fiction.,Interpersonal relations;Fiction.,Twins;Fiction.,Boys & Men,Brothers,Children's Books - Young Adult Fiction,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fiction,Interpersonal relations,Juvenile Fiction Boys & Men,Juvenile Fiction Mysteries & Detective Stories,Juvenile Fiction Social Themes Dating & Relationships,Mysteries (Young Adult),Mysteries, Espionage, & Detective Stories,Social Issues - Dating & Sex,Twins,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Young Adult Fiction Boys & Men,Young Adult Fiction Mysteries & Detective Stories,Young Adult Fiction Social Themes Dating & Sex
This One Time with Julia First Edition David Lampson Books Reviews
I bought this book last night and could't put it down. The story was so compelling. I loved the main character of Joe. The writing is excellent and it is told from the point of view of a man who isn't very smart and has a pretty bad memory (this is the only thing I had a slight issue with, if he has such bad memory, then how can he tell such a clear story... though the writer makes it work for the most part). There's a love story at the center of it all that's really romantic and moving. The whole thing really takes you on a journey. It's a book I will probably read again in a few years.
This book was HANDS DOWN one of the best books I've ever read. I made my book club read it and everyone LOVED it and this is a highly critical crowd. I'm a slow reader and usually have trouble finishing a book because I get bored. This book, however, was a page turner. The author has such a unique voice and the specificity with which he writes makes the images come to life. The characters are compelling and relatable. They're dynamic. They're complex yet simple. I've never raved about a book like I have this one. I'm telling you, if you want to be thoroughly entertained and if you have an appreciation for writing style, read this book! It is on a very short list of books I've enjoyed. I hope the writer writes more!!!
Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down! It was a fun read, sometimes it was also confusing. I enjoyed reading it. However, the story had no real plot line cuz the story just bopped around & the ending wasn't actually a conclusion or true ending but seemed like there would be a sequel to go on with Joe's life. But instead, it just ends and it was the worst ending that I've honestly ever read. I actually threw the book down from being so frustrated with such a stupid pointless ending. I want to know...what happens next with Joe????
This One Time With Julia is one of the strangest books I have ever read and I do not mean that in a good way. Half the time I didn't have a clue what was going on and when I finished the book I was left wondering what the heck the point of the book was.
Joe is a very weird boy. He is 18-years-old but he can't read, has very little education, he lives on his older brother's couch, and he is very naive. I almost wondered at times of he had some mental issues but it was never mentioned. Joe's brothers, Alvin and Marcus, were not in the book very much but I did not like either. Alvin took advantage of Joe and Marcus was just plain mean to him. As for Julia, she was manipulative and really nothing special. I did not like her at all.
The plot never really went anywhere. Honestly there seemed to be no point to the book. There really wasn't a conclusion, the story just ended. I'm still left wondering where the actual ending was.
Overall, This One Time With Julia is not a book I would recommend. Some people may enjoy it but it honestly made no sense to me. Definitely get this one from the library if you are at all interested.
Well this was a strange little book... To be honest, if I hadn't been reading it for the Debut Author's ARC Tour I don't think I would have finished it. I am glad that I did finish it, because it grew on me...a little anyway. The story is told by Joe. It doesn't take long to realize that Joe is different. Joe is the only character I sort of liked. He was sweet and quirky. The other characters were downright strange and awful! Neither of Joe's brothers really cared about him. Julia was just too self centered, flighty and annoying. Julia's brother Houston was plain old creepy.
At times the story is told in present tense, while other times Joe is telling a story that already occurred. Then we have the presence of his brother Alvin, who appears often, but it took me a while to realize he was dead. To me the story was just not believable at all. It was hard to follow at times. I wasn't really invested in the characters. I will say towards the end I did want to find out what exactly happened to Alvin, but it wasn't too surprising.
Then we have the ending. I will quote you the exact words that came out of my mouth as I closed this book "Huh!?". I know, profound, isn't it!
I don't really like to compare books, but the entire time I read this book I kept thinking of Imaginary Girls. It just had that same vibe, except with brothers. While this book wasn't for me I'm sure some of you would really enjoy it. I did enjoy the mysteriousness of the book as well as the "whodunnit" aspect.
This was a great novel with a surprise whodunit ending. A real page turner, but one with deep characters who made me aspire to be a more relaxed person. I'm so happy I read it despite the mixed reviews!
I really, really enjoyed this book. Some dark, funny, touching stuff that all starts with what the author did with Joe's narration. We see the world, story and mystery of the novel through the eyes of a charmingly/maddeningly naive narrator -- a clever trick that reminded me of what I liked about "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" and this other wonderfully weird young adult classic I read again and again as a kid, "I am the Cheese." And some of Lampson's basketball passages are absolutely beautiful. A definite recommend.
