This is definitely not a beach book. It requires concentration and thought when reading so if you are looking for something fluffy and easy, this probably isn't it. However, if you are looking for something different and more psychological this could be the book for you. My best guestimate is that the first 2/3 of this book introduces the reader to the main character "Jackal" and what we see is a young, angry, woman who is under a lot of pressure to be perfect. After an accident kills 400+ people she is labeled a mass murder and sentenced to prison. In exchange for a shorter sentence she enters an experimental program where she is in a virtual reality of solitary confinement for 8 years. It's after she gets released from "prison" that the story really gets interesting, Jackal is dealing with the after effects of both the solitary confinement and the "aftershocks" of the experiment. As the reader there was more than one moment where I wondered what was actually real, did Jackal get out of prison or is everything she is experiencing a hallucination.

This story had a great start and the author explained the the conflict well. However, the ending was anti climatic and underwhelming. The supporting characters could have been better developed.
Creative dystopian world and thoroughly enjoyable read. Looking forward to the movie!
This is one of the most powerful stories of how modern technology and society can go astray. Through the main character's adventures we learn a great deal about how today's world is evolving and the impact this can have on a human being. A must read.
This novel portrays a near-future world that is unfortunately believable. The divisions between socioeconomic groups have widened until they have next to no contact with each other. The protagonist is one of the have's who steps over the line and is punished with a form of solitary confinement. She survives this and also works her way through the consequences of what she has done. There are some twists along the way, and the ending is hopeful but not (yet) happy.
If you enjoyed Nicola Griffith's novel Slow River you owe it to yourself to check this book out.
Solitaire is a refreshingly original novel, which begs the reader to ponder privilege and roles. The protagonist is presented as neither hero nor villain. She is engagingly human and fallible, while trying to negotiate an impossible situation. Her relationship with another woman is not made a plot device, but is presented in the most normal of terms. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in a unique story with authentic characters.
How often do you get great sci-fi, interesting, complex characters, and poetic writing all in one book? In my experience, pretty much never. This book is all that. A great read.
I really liked this book. It has some similarities to Nicola Griffith's "Slow River," another one of my favorites. The main character is a young woman, overeducated and sheltered, suddenly betrayed and violently thrust out of her privileged environment, where she must learn what it's like to be just herself.

"Solitaire" attempts to answer the question when you strip away all the external layers surrounding you, outside of your home, without family, love, friendship, future, or past, who are you? Is there something inalienably, inextricably YOU? Something that holds true. Then, if you do find that core of yourself, how do you make yourself fit back into the world? Once perfectly self-contained and self-content, what need do you have for other people, for connections, for love?

Those are the questions it probes, but what holds the book together is the well-done plot and the vivid, fascinating character of Jackal. As a science fiction buff and a corporate monkey with high aspirations, I also greatly enjoyed the technology and the details thrown in that held the plot together. It was a fast, breathless read for me (especially as you got to 1/2 of the book).
